What does jetting your carb do?

What does jetting your carb do?

When you jet your motorcycle’s carburetor, you’re setting the optimal ratio of air-to-fuel that goes into your engine. The smaller the holes in the jets, the less fuel in the air and, as a result, less explosion and less power to run your engine.

What are the three jets in a carb?

Rejetting Carbs in 3 Simple Steps

  • Main adjustment (main jets)
  • Fine adjustment (gas needle + air adjustment)
  • Stationary adjustment (air screw / fuel screw)

How do I know what jets to put in my carb?

The old jets will have a number on the side of them to tell you how large the hole for the gas is. If you’re trying to give your engine more gas, install jets with a larger number which means it has a bigger hole. To make your engine run leaner, install jets with a smaller number and therefore with smaller holes.

What happens if main jet is too small?

A too small main jet will feel a bit like your running out of fuel and then switched over to reserve.

How do I know what size jets I have?

For example, a jet may be stamped (on its head) with the number 30. This indicates that the jet’s size is 30 mm. Installing a smaller size jet will reduce fuel flow, which is ideal for high-altitude conditions where air is limited, where a larger jet size increases fuel flow for oxygen-rich, low altitudes.

How do I know if my main jet is too rich?

If the pilot circuit is rich, the engine will have a rough idle or may not return to idle without “blipping” the throttle. You may also notice a distinct smell of raw fuel and some eye irritation from the exhaust.

Is it better to run rich or lean?

TLDR – running just a little lean could improve fuel economy and give extra power. However, run too lean and you risk engine failure because the engine runs too hot. Whereas running rich can waste fuel and increase pollution but will not damage the engine.

What is a lean spark plug?

A common symptom of your car running lean is that your spark plugs are clean or turn white. However, your spark plugs will become either too clean (evidenced by a lack of normal color) or white when your engine is running significantly lean.

Is it better to run lean or rich?

Is the 2015 TE300 jetting at 500 feet?

I’m pretty sure a 2015 TE300 at 500 feet would seize with a 158 main. robertaccio likes this. Fact is if you jet exactly like the OEM manual shows you will always be safe, the factory is not going to risk having buyers lean seize and get hurt as well as having engine damage issues to deal with.

How big of a jetting do I need for a 2015 KTM 300?

Anything smaller than a 172 main on these new 2015 bikes will be super lean on top. Anything larger than a 35 pilot and the bike will load up in the technical stuff. I tried the old KTM 300 go-to jetting of 38 pilot 168 main and got the same results as you did.

Is it safe to use JD jetting engine?

Fact is if you jet exactly like the OEM manual shows you will always be safe, the factory is not going to risk having buyers lean seize and get hurt as well as having engine damage issues to deal with. And for as many bikes I have used JD jetting that also goes along with JD jetting as well.
