Where did the game boules come from?
Originally, in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, the balls were probably made of stone. Gallic tribes, which were introduced to boules by the Romans, used wooden boules. In the 1800s in France, boules were typically made of a very hard wood, boxwood root.
What is the Jack in petanque?
Also known as a cochonnet, a jack is the wooden target ball, which players have to throw or roll their boules towards. The closest boule to the jack gains the player’s team a point. This loosely translates to ‘the end’, which refers to a round or innings that make up part of a game of petanque.

Why is boules important to France?
Many villages throughout France have a boules playing area. It’s a social focal point for neighbours to meet, play or watch the world go by. The French like nothing better than to give visitors a good thrashing on the boules pitch.
How many boules are there?
You can play the game with two teams of one, two or three players on each side. With teams of one or two, each player has 3 boules; with teams of 3, each has 2 boules. Boules should have a diameter between 7 and 8 cm; ideally made of steel and weighing between 650g and 800g.
